A record kept by the people who keep the records

The Historians Archive exists to make the work of club historians visible, comparable and permanent.

The material held at private clubs is extraordinary and almost entirely unpublished: original routing plans annotated by the architect, photographs of ground that no longer exists, minute books recording the reasoning behind changes that shaped a course for a century. Most of it lives in a single cabinet, in the care of a single person.

This archive collects highlights from those holdings, catalogued with the contributing historian and published with the club's consent. It is edited rather than exhaustive: the aim is a curated record the wider game can read, not a substitute for each club's own archive.

Alongside the club collections, the archive maintains profiles of the architects whose work our member clubs sit on — from the founding era through the present day.
