Why the name endures

Raised in Michigan and educated at Lake Forest College, DeVries came to design by way of a love of the game and apprenticeships with Tom Doak and Tom Fazio. His courses read the glacial landforms of the upper Midwest closely, and his greens have a reputation among architecture students for boldness.

Design principles

  • Read the glacial land before drawing a single hole
  • Greens bold enough to be the memory of the round
  • Rugged, unmanicured hazard edges
