Why the name endures

Nicklaus began designing while still winning majors, first with Pete Dye at Harbour Town. His early work reflected his own high, left-to-right game; his later courses widened considerably as he came to design for the field rather than for himself.

Design principles

  • Reward the well-shaped shot
  • Visible hazards; nothing hidden from the tee
  • Greens contoured to accept a high approach
